A Teacher’s Heartbeat

Being a teacher is never just a job. There’s always that extra something you do — not because you have to, but because your heart nudges you. I was reminded of this truth not long ago.

A Moment from January 2025

It happened with the last batch in January 2025. The students were deep into their revision for the board examination. One of the trickiest topics in English was Error Spotting and Correction — vast, detailed, and often confusing.

They struggled. I could see it. And I knew they needed more than just grammar rules and red ink.

The Birth of “CAPITAL WAVES”

After thinking long and hard, I came up with a mnemonic to help them remember the key elements. I called it “CAPITAL WAVES.”

And just like that — something clicked. It worked like magic.

But here’s the twist — I never recorded it anywhere. Not in a notebook, not in a file. It was one of those spontaneous classroom creations, the kind that happens in the moment and somehow turns into gold.

A Forgotten Spark

Fast forward a few months. I was asked to organize a teachers’ event for Erode Sahodaya. I wanted to share that same mnemonic — it had helped my students so much.

But when I tried to recall it, my mind went blank. I replayed lessons in my head, searched through notes and folders — nothing came back.

Then, as a last hope, I thought — why not ask a student from that batch?

The Moment That Moved Me

I called Nishvanth Kailasam out of class and gently asked:

“Child, do you remember the mnemonic we used for error correction?”

Without even a pause, he smiled and replied:

“Madam, it was CAPITAL WAVES.”

That moment stopped me in my tracks. I had introduced it five or six months ago — and yet, it had stayed so clearly in his mind.

It wasn’t just about the mnemonic. It was about the connection, the impact, the invisible thread that ties a teacher to her students — even months later, even beyond the classroom.

The Joy of Being a Teacher

It’s moments like these that make me want to live this life — the life of a teacher — forever.

I have so many such memories: moments of joy, laughter, love, and quiet understanding — the kind only children can give.

Because children have this rare magic… They make life unforgettable.
